Vinyl Marmoleum Flooring : Health Impacts

Vinyl Marmoleum Flooring : Health Impacts

Marmoleum has no adverse health issues whatsoever, either during production, its useful life, or disposal. Quite the opposite is true. Read below to find out the health benefits of Marmoleum.

Marmoleum is the "natural" choice when health concerns are involved. For this reason it is broadly applied in many hospitals, as well as being recommended by medical professionals to people with respiratory disorders.

How to Begin Site Prep Work For Marmoleum?

That depends upon the nature and age of the subfloor. Always consult with your installer first. If adjacent floorboards are at different heights, sanding may be required. If they have serious flaws, a self-leveling cementitious product or a premade 1/8"-1/2" hardboard or cement board may suffice. If the concrete slab is cracked, a filler needs to be used in conjunction with an isolation membrane. If the floor is damp it needs to dried thoroughly. If mildew or mold exists they need to be removed. If the floor is squeeky or weak, structural work may be required or hardboard or cement board may suffice.

Marmoleum: For Garage Flooring Not Recommended

Marmoleum: For Garage Flooring Not Recommended

You can use Marmoleum in the garage, but not as flooring for traditional garage uses.
International Residential Code R309.3, says garage flooring must be an “approved, non-combustible material,” according to the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors.

In addition, oils and fluids that drip from cars can eventually erode the linoleum's adhesive backing. Also, prolonged exposure to moisture from sleet, snow and rain can damage linoleum. While you cannot use marmoleum as garage flooring where you park, it does have useful garage applications if the area maintains a temperature of at least 55 degrees. Temperature control will keep the linoleum in favorable condition for at least 40 years.

Using Marmoleum Flooring in Basements

If you use floor radiant heating electric or otherwise, this can penetrate through any underlayment except lose with reflective foil. Depending upon the R-value for the underlayment the infra-red heat will penetrate through more or less quickly. In this case radiant heat, it is best to use an underlayment with the lowest R value. Our SCI 1/8" synthetic rubber pad is an excellent non-toxic pad with a very low R-value of .097 making it well suited to in-floor heating.

Can you use the other pads? Yes, but the response time will be slower. This means, if someone opens the windows or doors in the winter and the house gets cold, the response time to bring the temp back up to normal conditions will take a little longer if the heat has to fight its way through the underlayment. Having said that, we have confirmed with numerous customers that radiant heat works fine with cork flooring or marmoleum click flooring, both of which have cork underlayment built into them.

Instructions For Installing Marmoleum in Basements:

When you are installing peel and stick tiles ensure the subfloor plywood is the same temperature top and bottom for example the crawlspace or basement. This will make sure that the substructure does not shrink causing the tile to move. Before placing the new tiles on the floor surface make sure all boxes of tile are open and placed in the room which they will be installed for a minimum of 48-hours at room temperature.

Is Marmoleum  Toxic?

First off, Marmoleum in itself is not toxic, it is a natural and recycled material, however those materials that are placed under Marmoleum can be toxic so if you are doing a project, these are the materials to watch out foor.

There are many types of underlayment such as cork, rubber, and recycled. Some have vapor barriers built into them such as the EcoTimber recycled underlayment but cork and rubber do not. Almost every flooring manufacturer requires a vapor barrier to protect against moisture coming up from the subfloor. Therefore, a 6 mil polyethylene sheeting is required to be placed beneath the underlayment.

Our Moisture Block vapor barrier is a recycled plastic sheeting that is ideal for this purpose. All of our underlayments and vapor barriers are non-toxic and are listed along with each flooring product. Please read the installation instructions of each product for further details of what type of underlayment is required.

So you have a home renovation project at home you need to complete, and are trying to determine what type of underlayment to use for your bathroom flooring. You shouldn't have any major concern you'll have with laminate an underlayment is that it has been known to collect moisture and this can cause it to warp, or unwanted expansion and shrinkage. So this is the negative side of using laminate. If you're wondering what the positive side of ;a,omto is, it's probably it's cost effectiveness, lets face it. Laminate is probably one of the cheapest materials out there.

How to Remove Marmoleum Flooring

Marmoleum Flooring and Adhesive Glue can be removed fairly easily. Just cut it into strips as long as there is no vinyl backing left. Getting all the staples removed or beat down is by far the hardest part. If it's ran underneath the cabinets use a sharp razor knife and score it several times and it should break off pretty clean.

A lot of staples will have slivers of plywood caught underneath you should either pull out or use needle nose pliers to remove the sliver then hammer then down flush. When you remove the underlayment and adhesive you don't want anything sticking up. It's a good idea to refasten the subfloor onto the joist with screws or screw shank underlayment nails. You should see how flat it is too... may have to belt sand some seams.
